It believes that change happens iteratively instead of in big, drastic moments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media0.giphy.com\/media\/RhB0eCe5aUXrPMR0Kx\/giphy.gif?cid=790b7611d029de587d8728cca5b31bde7b2dc50b6eba7413&amp;rid=giphy.gif\" alt=\"Change GIF by memecandy\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief, the word itself does not mean \u201ccontinuous improvement\u201d. Continuous improvement is actually a result of Kaizen. A better translation would probably be \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/kaizen-lost-translation-jun-nakamuro-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change for the better<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d as it advocates making a change that has an effect instead of change for change\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The History of Kaizen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of Kaizen was developed in the Japanese manufacturing industry after World War II. Although many companies implemented this approach to their businesses, it was at Toyota that this way of working really stood out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyota_Production_System\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toyota Production System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TPS), the very system that brought us Lean manufacturing, highlights Kaizen as one of its main principles. TPS is a set of management practices and philosophies developed by the car manufacturer that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0stresses continuous improvement in quality, technology, processes, company culture, productivity, safety, and leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kaizen&#8217;s aim is to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/blog\/project-vs-process-how-to-determine-the-difference\/\">standardized processes<\/a> so as to eliminate waste. By eliminating waste, not only can you achieve a more efficient workflow, but also reduce costs and enhance customer value.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1986, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masaaki_Imai\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masaaki Imai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organizational theorist and management consultant, introduced and popularized Kaizen to the Western world. Both through his book, \u201cKaizen: The Key to Japan\u2019s Competitive Success\u201d and the consulting institute he founded called Kaizen Institute Consulting Group (KICG), Imai familiarized companies outside of Japan with the concepts, systems, and tools of Kaizen.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Key Elements of Kaizen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaizen.com\/what-is-kaizen.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KAIZEN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2122<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are five fundamental principles of Kaizen. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Know your customer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: this is about establishing customer value so you can give them an improved experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Let it flow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the primary aim of everyone in your company should be to eliminate waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Go to Gemba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cGemba\u201d translates to \u201cthe actual place\u201d and this principle highlights that value is created only when things actually happen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Empower people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: this is self-explanatory, you need to provide the right resources to your team so they can succeed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be transparent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: you need concrete evidence to demonstrate performance and improvements.<\/span><\/span>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/gzKRbHzioNmzS\/giphy.gif?cid=790b7611b37f0af91c89f3cf42759f2c89e76f46b045ece2&amp;rid=giphy.gif\" alt=\"sassy pants chocolate GIF\" width=\"440\" height=\"291\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Improve your day-to-day tasks!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As previously mentioned, a result of Kaizen is continuous improvement. By introducing your company to the concept of Kaizen and taking on board its principles and values, it can steer them towards adopting the approach of continuous improvement in their day-to-day operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Understanding the Benefits of Continuous Improvement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing a culture of continuous improvement can be beneficial. Here are some examples of how it can help your business operate on a higher level:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Customer Satisfaction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one of the key elements of Kaizen, knowing your customer can lead to providing them with a better experience.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nature of continuous improvement challenges workers to always look for ways to enhance their workflows. This can result in better product alignment which helps to better recognize customer values.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Better Engagement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers aren\u2019t the only ones who benefit from a continuous improvement culture, businesses themselves will find that it can also engage employees better. The basis of continuous improvement encourages all workers to <a href=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/blog\/how-to-tackle-scope-creep\/\">identify flaws in processes<\/a> and assess how to make it better, and if successful, share and implement it throughout the entire company. Improved Efficiency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It comes as no surprise that incremental improvements can add up to improved efficiency. Here are some of the more common ways of implementing it as according to the Kaizen concept:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. PDCA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PDCA\">PDCA<\/a> stands for Plan \u2192 Do \u2192 Check \u2192 Act and it is a method used in business to spur continuous improvement of processes and products. Also known as the Deming circle or the Shewhart cycle, it follows a sequential order of stages which are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Set up goals and requirements that can deliver the desired outcome.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Carry out what was outlined in the planning phase and collate data to see whether the change has made an impact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Check<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Evaluate the data that was collected from the do phase and make changes or improvements to the process accordingly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Take measures to improve the process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. 5 Whys<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Five_whys\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 Whys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a problem-solving technique that gets to the root cause by asking the question \u201cwhy?\u201d five times. It proposes that by asking the question five times, you can get to the solution of your problem and it should ideally direct you to a process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an example of how it works. The problem: There is no coffee available in the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? \u2192 Because the coffee machine is not working.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? \u2192 Because it hasn\u2019t been properly maintained.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? \u2192 Because the person who usually does it is on vacation so no one has been doing it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? \u2192 Because a replacement person was never allocated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? \u2192 Because the person in charge forgot to allocate a replacement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here we found out that the root cause was because managers forgot to assign a replacement for a vacationing employee. To avoid future mishaps in this area, we now know to ensure that there should always be someone responsible for the maintenance of the coffee machine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39137\" src=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Kaizen Event<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leanmanufacturingtools.org\/625\/planning-and-running-kaizen-events\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaizen event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as a Kaizen blitz or Kaizen burst, is a workshop-like event that focuses on process improvement. Often facilitated by someone in the implementation team, it includes training, analysis, and design of an area of business that requires enhancement. An event can take up to 10 days and tools such as process mapping are involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these one-off events can be beneficial, it should be noted that they should only be part of an overall continuous improvement strategy for true effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if your business is doing well, there\u2019s always room for improvement. One of the biggest gains of continuous improvement is that it can achieve a huge change over time. But it doesn&#8217;t come easily. Whichever method your business decides to implement, remember that it takes time, practice, and consistency for it to have a true effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your business practice continuous improvement?
