We can all agree that it\u2019s just too easy a habit to get into, especially with distracting devices available at our fingertips (smartphones, anyone?)<\/p>\n<p>But why is this? Why do we put things off when we know they need to be done?<\/p>\n<p>Well, according to Joseph Ferrari, PhD, associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/articles\/200507\/why-we-procrastinate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three types of procrastinators<\/a>, and the category you fall into explains why you procrastinate.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>\u201cArousal types, or thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the <\/em><strong><em>euphoric rush<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Avoiders, who may be avoiding <\/em><strong><em>fear of failure<\/em><\/strong><em> or even <\/em><strong><em>fear of success<\/em><\/strong><em>, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Decisional procrastinators, who <\/em><strong><em>cannot make a decision<\/em><\/strong><em>. The \u2018frog\u2019 is the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad task that you just don\u2019t want to do\u200a\u2014\u200abut know that you <em>have <\/em>to. It\u2019s the one that holds the most consequence if you don\u2019t complete it, and the one that is most likely to fall prey to procrastination. However, it\u2019s also the task that will give you the biggest feeling of accomplishment once it\u2019s out of the way. The one that will set the ball rolling for the rest of your tasks for the day.<\/p>\n<p>This is why you should tackle it first.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>And How Can I Spot the Frog?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_management#The_Eisenhower_Method\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eisenhower Method<\/a> (made popular by Eisenhower himself) categorizes tasks by urgency and importance. By creating a similar matrix of need v.s. want, you can categorize your tasks into four groups:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Things you <strong>have to<\/strong> do, and <strong>don\u2019t want<\/strong> to do<\/li>\n<li>Things you <strong>have to<\/strong> do, and <strong>want to<\/strong> do<\/li>\n<li>Things you <strong>don\u2019t have to<\/strong> do, and <strong>want to<\/strong> do<\/li>\n<li>Things you <strong>don\u2019t have to<\/strong> do, and <strong>don\u2019t want<\/strong> to do<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The \u2018frog\u2019 belongs in the first group. For example, while it may appear that you\u2019re accomplishing something by going through your inbox, you aren\u2019t. You are merely faffing about and avoiding what truly needs to be done\u200a\u2014\u200athe frog. Steer clear of checking your email first thing in the morning as it will clutter your mind and distract you from the things you need to focus on.
