But whether or not you truly know what it is, and where it came from, is probably a whole other story. Part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lean_manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lean<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Just-in-time_manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing<\/a>, it is a highly visual method that paints a picture of the workflow process, and the work passing through. The aim of Kanban is to help identify any bottlenecks early on in the process, allowing us to deliver a high-quality product\/service.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>FYI: the Kanban definition in Japanese translates to \u2018sign board\u2019, \u2018billboard\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A Brief History of Kanban<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The whole Kanban concept was initially developed in the 1940s by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiichi_Ohno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taiichi Ohno<\/a>, an industrial engineer for Toyota, as a means to improve manufacturing efficiency. Ohno derived inspiration from supermarkets and their way of handling inventory\u200a\u2014\u200aby only stocking by demand. He supposed that the way the rate of demand was used to control the rate of production, and how that maximized the flow between the supermarket and the consumer, could be applied to car manufacturing to match inventory levels with the number of materials consumed.<\/p>\n<p>Once applied to the Toyota production line, cards were used as visual signs to indicate when inventory levels were low on the factory floor. This information was then passed onto the warehouse, which was responsible for replacing the consumed materials, and then the exact amount of materials was given back to the factory floor. The warehouse team would then create their own card signals to their suppliers when their stock was low.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_9365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9365\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9365 size-full\" title=\"Factory needing to implementing the Kanban system\" src=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/kitchen-assembly-line.gif\" alt=\"Example where the Kanban system is not implemented\" width=\"250\" height=\"185\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That\u2019s one production line that needs to implement the Kanban system!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>Using visual cues to signal certain stages of the production process, and the quick response to observed demand proved to be a more efficient way to do things. However much Kanban has evolved since its early years, this type of efficiency is what it still aims to achieve today.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Kanban Boards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/blog\/how-kanban-boards-can-benefit-your-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kanban board<\/a> is a visualization of the work process. As visual creatures, our brains are able to process images 60,000 times faster than text which is what makes Kanban a great tool to document activity and help the development of a product or service run as smoothly as possible. The boards come in both physical format and digital versions.<\/p>\n<h3>Physical Kanban Board<\/h3>\n<p>All you need to construct your physical Kanban board is a whiteboard and sticky notes. A great and inexpensive way to start your Kanban experience, they are good for teams where all members are in the same location and have the ability to observe and add to the board. Compared to the digital version, however, they hold certain limitations.<\/p>\n<h3>Online Kanban Board<\/h3>\n<p>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zenkit<\/a>, many project management solutions include Kanban software. Rather self-explanatory, the purpose of each column is to represent the stages of development from the beginning when ideas and a backlog are created, to the work in progress, and then finally, to when the work has been completed.<\/p>\n<p>There are no set rules of how to use Kanban perse, but there are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kanban_%28development%29#Principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six general practices<\/a> to remember when applying it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Visualization<\/li>\n<li>Limiting work in progress<\/li>\n<li>Flow management<\/li>\n<li>Making policies explicit<\/li>\n<li>Using feedback loops<\/li>\n<li>Collaborative or experimental evolution<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The aim of these general practices is to ensure that you utilize the Kanban method to its core purpose\u200a\u2014\u200ato reduce waste, continuously improve the process, and <a href=\"https:\/\/zenkit.com\/blog\/how-the-simple-checklist-can-improve-your-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increase overall productivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n    \n<p>The beauty of a Kanban board is its flexibility. The simplicity of its structure means that it is not exclusive to office use only.
